SOUND THE TRUMPETS is an established music publishing company specialising in brass and woodwind ensemble music. The company was formed in 1997 and is run by two experienced former instrumental music teachers, Mike Walton and Barbara Densham.
Mike Walton
Mike Walton is an experienced performer and teacher. As a performer, he directs and plays in Sound The Trumpets trumpet quartet, Prince Bishops brass quintet and regularly writes or arranges music for these ensembles. He is also an accomplished orchestral trumpeter and soloist. For twenty years he was Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle - upon - Tyne. He was also a lecturer and examiner at the University of Sunderland. Having taught children from year 4 to mature students at Diploma level he is therefore extremely knowledgeable about the musical needs of students at all levels.
Barbara Densham
Barbara Densham is an experienced woodwind teacher who has taught at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and other independent schools in the North East of England for over twenty years. During this time she has conducted Beginner and Junior Wind Bands as well as several woodwind ensembles of varying abilities. In addition to acting in an advisory capacity for all the woodwind music, Barbara is responsible for the administration, marketing and smooth running of the business. She takes great pride in her prompt attention to orders and is willing to help with any enquiry about Sound The Trumpets publications.

Nigel Penfold
Nigel studied saxophone, clarinet and piano at Trinity College of Music achieving a First Class B. Mus.Honours Degree followed by an MA with distinction in Thoery and Annalysis. For over 15 years he worked as an instrumental music teacher. Being principally a saxophonist the majority of his freelance playing was with swing and jazz ensembles, but he also played in the classical and popular music fields. In 2012 he moved to Hong Kong where he played a significant role in building the curricular and extra-curricular music programme at Harrow International School, and since 2016 he has been expanding and enriching the accademic and performance standards at the Independent Schools Foundation Academy in Pokfulam, Hong Kong. He is a prolific published composer and arranger and since 2018 has also been an active member of the ABRSM Main and Jazz examination panel.
Philip Hansell
Philip studied for a Fine Arts Degree in Wales. He has composed a string quartet which was performed by the Bingham Quartet. As well as compose, Philip also writes fiction and has had short stories and two novels published. He has also had a play performed at the Edinburgh Festival. Philip now lives in Cambridge with his partner and a little black cat, who tries to stop him when he plays the piano!
John Dutton
John was born in Denbighshire and became interested in writing music at an early age. He has written several marches, and arranged others for brass bands, as well as light music for piano and also a 4 Trumpet Fanfare.
